  • Abstract
The properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) field emission cathodes fabricated by a dip coating method with trivalent chromium conversion coated substrates are studied. Two kinds of substrates with different morphologies, one with a rough crackled surface and the other with a smooth surface, were used for making the CNT cathodes, and their I–V curves and emission patterns were evaluated. The results show that, as compared to the smooth substrate surface, the rough surface with self-assembled sub-micro-cracks on the substrate can dramatically enhance the uniformity of the emission pattern and the emission efficiency. The cathode fabricated with the crackled substrate shows good field emission properties such as high brightness, good uniformity, a low turn-on field (0.86 V/μm) and a high current density of 10 mA/cm2 at 2.5 V/μm.
