Towards a closer integration of Ph.D. training to industrial and societal needs Original Research Article

There is a growing concern to upgrade the relevance of Ph.D. education throughout Europe in order to increase efficiency and career options for graduates. The paper reviews some of the developments taking place and emphasises some of the emerging trends as they appear in Europe today. Developments are reviewed with special emphasis on the Ph.D. in chemistry and analytical chemistry. The doctoral study programme of the University of Antwerp is described as an example of an adaptation of the traditional European Ph.D. degree.
