Abstract
The possibility of in situ fabrication of Al–TiC composite using reactive slag process is studied in the present paper. Commercial pure aluminum, cryolite, titanium oxide and graphite have been used. Aluminum was melted by an induction furnace and then a mixture of salts powder was added to it. Specimens of aluminum matrix composites containing various percentages of TiCs were prepared. Microstructure, mechanical properties and phase analysis of specimens were examined. Results obtained showed that, in situ fabrication of TiC reinforcement in aluminum matrix is completely possible. Moreover, in spite of general anticipation that is about in situ process, the titanium carbide compound is formed in whisker shape rather than as a particle.
