Abstract
The deformation and failure behavior of ZE41A alloy in cast and heat treated conditions were investigated using tensile test at various temperatures, from 25 to 200 °C and at a strain rate range of 0.005–0.05 S−1. The stress and strain corresponding to the fracture were estimated. An analytical flow stress model is proposed in this study for the deformation behavior of alloy at the elevated temperature, and strain rate effect, and strain by introducing Zener–Holloman parameter. The strain rate sensitivity increases with increase in temperature and the activation energy decreases with strain. The microstructure revealed eutectic in the grain boundaries. The fracture surface was observed using scanning electron microscope. Consequently, deformation and failure of ZE41A magnesium alloy were studied and resulted in cleavage or quasi-cleavage fracture.
