  • Abstract
Friction surfacing is one of the advanced manufacturing techniques and is used for deposition of desired material on substrate of interest. The stainless steel is deposited over the low carbon steel by friction surfacing. The present study discusses the principle and process parameters involved in friction surfacing techniques, bonding mechanism, factors affecting the selection of process parameters, approach for the experimental work and testing of bond quality by various methods. Metallography and hardness survey is conducted across the longitudinal and transverse direction of the deposit. Regression equations are obtained based on 23 designs approach. The optimum process parameters required for deposit to get desired properties such as tensile strength, shear strength, surface roughness, width and height is determined. Corrosion test was carried out to find the suitability of these deposits for chemical pumps, pressure vessels and joining of dissimilar metals. Experimental results are expected to find great use for important applications in defense, aerospace, electrical, automobile and many other industrial sectors in the engineering fields.
