  • Abstract
The functional properties of the composite membranes prepared by applying different pressures generated from polystyrene and titanium molybdate are described. The fabricated membranes were characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared, X-ray Diffraction, particle size analyzer and Scanning electron microscopy technique and have been investigated for its functional, diffusive and electrochemical properties. The diffusion of electrolytes as determined by the Torell, Meyer and Sievers (TMS) method reveals dependence of membrane potential on the porosity, charge on the membrane matrix, charge and size of permeating ions. The membrane determines the activity of cations with fairly good accuracy in the higher concentration range and shows a great selectivity for K+. The selectivity for other alkali cations (Na+ and Li+) has also been calculated. The fixed charge density of the membrane had been evaluated and was found to be mechanically stable, and can be operated over a wide pH range. Other electrochemical properties like transport number and its ion-exchange capacity have been discussed.
