Abstract
The design of fluorescent lights and high-pressure discharge lamps brings basic physics to the world of everyday experience. This article examines a broad range of discharge lighting systems from a physics perspective, as well as the materials and electronic issues in practical design. It includes the history of discharge research, mentioning some of the most promising avenues of current inquiry.
