  • Abstract
Microporous–mesoporous carbons were synthesized via colloidal silica templating using Kraft lignin as a carbon precursor, which is a waste byproduct from paper industry. A unique feature of these carbons are uniform spherical mesopores achieved after dissolving colloidal silica used as a hard template, while micropores were created by post-synthesis CO2 activation. The resulting activated lignin-based carbons possessed high specific surface area (up to 2000 m2/g) and microporosity and mesoporosity easily tunable by adjusting activation conditions and optimizing the amount and particle size of the colloidal silica used. The total pore volumes of activated carbons obtained by using 20 and 13 nm silica colloids as a hard template exceeded 1 and 2 cm3/g, respectively.
