Abstract
Stress is built up in a shape memory alloy if the strain recovery due to shape memory effect is blocked. This study provides a one-dimensional model for the analysis of the constrained shape memory effect. The model describes how the stress stabilizes a martensite at a temperature above the Af temperature. The condition for the martensite and austenite to reach equilibrium at that temperature has been obtained in terms of the balance between the elastic strain energy and the chemical (Helmholtz) free energy of the two phases. The stress values predicted from the model have been compared with the experimental results of a nickel–titanium shape memory alloy.
