A comparison between actual and stress intensity near-crack-tip elastic fields

A comparison is made between complete near-crack-tip fields and singular fields associated with the stress intensity factor, given by an elasticity solution. Infinite plane and edge-crack geometries are considered, and the relevance of the results to fatigue crack growth rate, monotonic fracture and the use of moiré interferometry to measure crack-tip quantities discussed.
