Abstract
Based on experimentally measured textures of interstitial free steel, this paper shows how the textures after equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) via routes A and C, up to 4 passes, can easily be understood by means of a rotation field for simple shear. The rotation field was taken from the literature, and results from a full constraint Taylor rate sensitive calculation for simple shear, assumed to act parallel to the die channel’s intersection plane. Isolation of the effect of one billet rotation explains why the microstructures obtained via routes A and C are very different, even though both routes imply strain reversal between passes. The application of this analysis to the textures after ECAP via routes BA and BC is less self-evident, because for these routes the plane of plane strain changes from one pass to another.
