Abstract
Production of band by flattening initially round wire in a multi-stand mill often meets a serious difficulty—edge cracking. A three-dimensional finite element simulation of the stress–strain state in flattening has been developed to explain the defect and find ways to prevent it. It is shown that there is considerable stress relief at the edges in asymmetric flattening which prevents edge break. The mathematical model presented makes it possible to create the optimal technology for the flattening of asymmetric band.
