Abstract
The capability of a 60 W low power CO2-laser, in cutting various nonmetallic materials has been studied. Materials such as plastic, wood, particle board, and rubber were cut with various levels of laser power and different workpiece cutting speeds.
A theoretical model has been introduced that estimates the depth of the cut in terms of material properties and cutting speed. The experimental cutting results were compared with theoretical predictions. Two correction parameters have been introduced in the analysis to improve the theoretical model. The analysis will assist the manufacturing industry to choose a suitable laser system for cutting or marking nonmetallic materials.
