Abstract
An important parameter in the operation of hot rolling mill is the cooling mechanism of work roll. The determination of the best geometry of the cooling system, therefore, plays an important role in obtaining the highest heat transfer coefficient and in avoiding lateral water splashes. Using the finite-difference method, a computer program was developed to solve the work roll heat transfer equations in the unsteady state with varying boundary conditions. In the boundary condition for water spray, parameters such as spray angle, the angle of spray impact on work roll, the distance of header from work roll, water pressure, type of nozzle used, etc. are variable. This paper explains the effect of each one of these parameters on work roll temperature.
