Abstract
This paper reports about deformation behavior of coated paperboard during indentation of a trapezoidal center bevel cutter. The indentation was investigated experimentally in the initial compression stage when no crack or fracture occurred yet. By reviewing the uniform compressive testing of paperboard in the direction of thickness, proposed equivalent moduli were analyzed experimentally by considering strain dependency. By analyzing the correlation between cutting resistance and compressive testing, it has been revealed that out-of-plane equivalent moduli are the primary factors used to characterize the indentation load response when the blade tip’s thickness is >10 μm. The cutting pressure on the blade tip has a linear relationship to the uniform compressive testing. Regarding the surface layer breaking, it has been found that in-plane mechanical properties such as the coated layer’s friction influence the magnitude of the first peak load, while the upsetting maximum resistance per unit tip thickness is independent to the existence of coated layer.
