Abstract
The present study intends to assess the fatigue damage of un-notched and notched components using a newly developed energy-based critical plane fatigue damage parameter. The parameter integrates the normal and shear energies calculated on the critical plane on which the stress and strain Mohrʹs circles are the largest during the loading and unloading parts of a cycle. For notched fatigue data, Neuberʹs analysis has been used to calculate the local stress and strain components at the notch root. The developed fatigue damage approach is used to predict the fatigue life of notched and un-notched components made of Haynes 188, 1045 steel, 4340 steel, 1020 HR sheet steel, high strength steel, aluminum alloys 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 subjected to tension, torsion and tension-torsion loading conditions. The predicted fatigue lives were found in very good agreement with the experimental fatigue life reported in the literature.
