Abstract
Three lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains namely, Streptococcusfaecalis NCIM 2607, Lactobacillus easel NCIM 2586, Pediococcus cerevisiae NCIM 2171 procured from National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. India, were separately tested for their antagonistic activity against seafood-borne bacteria namely, Escherichia coli, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in combination with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA). EDTA alone gave lower inhibitory activity against seafood-borne baeteria as compared to combination with LAB. Of the three LAB with EDTA tried for inhibition against E.coli, the highest inhibition was shown by P. cerevisiae followed by Strep. [aecalis and then by Lb. casei. Similarly, for A. hydrophila, the highest inhibition was shown by P. cerevisiae followed by Strep. faecalis and then by Lb. casei. Bacteriocin like inhibitory substances (BLIS) obtained from P. cerevisiae in combination with EDTA showed inhibition against A. hydrophila, the highest inhibition was exerted by P. cerevisiae, followed by Strep, faecalis and Lb. casei.
