Abstract
When fitting spectra with a low number of counts per channel, the standard χ2 fits will give systematic errors. The maximum likelihood method will perform better. Its behaviour in goodness-of-fit testing is analyzed and some alternative methods employing empirical distribution functions are mentioned.
