  • Abstract
    In order to analyze the crack closure phenomenon evoked by stationary and transient thermal conditions and to investigate its effects on fracture parameters, the finite element method is adopted considering the existence of friction conditions along crack surfaces. Three different states of contact are possible along the crack surfaces: the open, stick and stick state. For each of this state appropriate contact conditions are applied. The problems considered are solved incrementally due to their non-linear nature. Thermal stress intensity factors are evaluated from displacement nodal data using appropriate formulas. Various problems involving edge and central cracks, existing in homogenous or dissimilar materials, being in full or partial closure are studied. Numerical results corresponding to a variety of crack lengths, crack orientations, frictional conditions, thermal conditions are illustrated. Comparison with results from the literature show the high level of accuracy of the proposed method.
