Absorption and coherent emission of single molecules

Absorption of single molecules is considered as a special case of an interference effect. Different schemes of interference measurements, which are more suitable for single molecules, are described. Advantages and disadvantages of absorption detection relative to emission (luminescence) detection are analyzed. A great attention is paid to a comparison of signal-to-noise ratios for the two types of measurements.
