Normal coordinate analyses and CNDO/II calculations of isonitrosopropiophenone, and its semicarbazone and thiosemicarbazone derivatives are reported. The synthesis and characterization of 1:1 (metal–ligand ratio) complexes of the semicarbazone and thiosemicarbazone with Ni(II), Cu(II) and Co(II) are presented. The preparation and characterization of the Ni(II), Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes of isonitrosopropiophenone are also included. The ease of formation of the said complexes with these ligands is discussed.
