Abstract
Reactions of iron(III) complexes with five polyaminocarboxylates and hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline solution were investigated. Iron(III) complexes of which the ring including two nitrogen and iron atoms is five-membered formed a well-known stable side-on peroxo adduct. On the other hand, iron(III) complexes which have a six-membered ring formed a short-lived side-on peroxo adduct and then changed to iron(II) complex and superoxide. Electrochemical measurements showed that the redox potentials of the iron complexes having a six-membered ring are higher than those of the complexes having a five-membered ring. These results indicate that the chelate size is an important factor for tuning the redox potential of the iron center and for the reactivity toward hydrogen peroxide.
