Strings, black holes and the extreme energy cosmic rays

In a large class of string and string inspired models the string excitation and black hole pictures invoked as an explanation of trans-GZK cosmic ray events are equivalent at high excitations. Single particle inclusive distributions are thermal, asymptotically at the Hagedorn temperature. Some observational consequences are briefly explored.
