Abstract
Fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites are being increasingly considered for use in civil infrastructure. They have tremendous applicability to bridge systems ranging from use in seismic retrofit and strengthening of existing structural components, to use in new systems, either in all composite form, or in conjunction with conventional construction materials. This paper provides specific examples of developments, emphasizing aspects of transition, as well as the critical advantages offered by the inherent anisotropy and tailorability. Implementation of the technology in the field is focused through examples of field applications on the advantages offered by these materials over conventional materials of construction.
