Abstract
The most important research findings pertain to a better understanding of the timing and progression of biochemical and cellular events occurring during the developmental stage of laminitis. Using molecular biological techniques, a critical gene was identified for the upregulation of the thrombo-spondin motif known as aggrecanase-1. Aggrecan and other large polysulfated proteoglycans are important components of the lamellar structure; therefore with the presence of aggrecanase identified as one of the earlier occuring substances present in laminitis, this and other chemokines and cytokines may play an important role in lamellar tissue failure.
