Thermodynamics of ion exchange

Thermodynamics determines the boundary conditions for the diffusion process in an ion exchange process. It also determines the driving force for the diffusion. A simple one-dimensional model of nearest neighbor interactions is shown to be adequate to describe the boundary conditions. The likelihood that it can also describe the driving force for diffusion is discussed.
