Abstract
In this study the change in the kinetic coefficient of friction was investigated during a line contact threshold galling testing procedure. A substantial increase in the friction was measured at the onset of galling whereas the friction remained relatively constant during non-galled tests. From the results of this study, it appears that an increase in the kinetic coefficient of friction can be used as a necessary condition in the identification of galling. This condition will reduce the subjectivity in identifying galling in cases where galling is questionable. Results are presented for three types of stainless steel.
