Computation of eigenmodes of photonic crystals by inversion of the Maxwell operator

We describe a method to compute the lowest eigenvalues of the Maxwell operator in a periodic medium. We prove that the Lلnczos method applied to the inverse Maxwell operator provides a fast, robust and superconvergent algorithm. We apply this method to the computation of the dispersion relations of a 2D photonic crystal.
