Abstract
Econometric models sometimes represent claims not only about the probabilistic relations between the variables in the model but about their causal relations as well. How do we test these causal claims? Controlled experiments are generally assumed to provide the best method. This paper explores conditions under which standard procedures for estimating econometric models can stand as substitutes for a controlled experiment.
