Abstract
In an attempt to enhance the resistance of TiFe to disintegration during hydrogenation, a small addition of boron or carbon to the alloy was made. The hydrogenation properties of these ternary alloys were studied and compared with those of TiFe. For TiFeB0.001, Ti1.1FeB0.001, TiFeC0.001 and Ti1.1FeC0.001 alloys, addition of B or carbon induced the formation of Ti and TiFe2 but did not improve the disintegration resistance. Boron and carbon appeared to suppress the formation of the TiFeH2 phase. The absorption capacities were drastically reduced. The plateaus became more inclined and the pressures were higher than that of TiFe. The change of hydrogenation properties is explained based on the presence of Ti and TiFe2 and the interaction between B or carbon and hydrogen in the interstitial sites.
