Abstract
The hydrogen uptake characteristics of a mechanically milled Ti–Mg–Ni sample processed in accord with that of Lomness et al. [Hydrogen uptake characteristics of mechanically alloyed mixtures of Ti–Mg–Ni. Int J Hydrogen Energy 2002; 27: 915–20] has been shown to rapidly absorb 2.5 wt % of hydrogen at 296 K . This is significantly less than the 11 wt % presented by Lomness et al. but occurs at a lower temperature. X-ray diffraction shows that our ball-milled sample comprises low crystallinity elemental Ti, Mg and Ni which converts to Ti 2 Ni , Ti and Mg during temperature cycling. Examination of the hydrided sample shows the presence of Ti 2 NiH x ( x > 0.5 ) , TiH y ( 0.7 < y < 2 ) and MgH 2 . Unidentified minor phases are also present.
