Broad solitons in homogeneous Hertzian granular chains

Evidence of the existence of solitons in a loaded chain of spherical grains interacting through Hertzian contact forces, in the regime of moderate to weak excitations, is presented. These solitary waves have properties very different from the solitons previously observed in this system. In particular, they can be much broader.
