Abstract
0.5 wt.% of each catalyst (Co, Ni) used to synthesize single shell nanotubes are found to remain in purified samples even after prolonged treatments in boiling concentrated HNO3. Chemical analysis, 59Co NMR experiments and HRTEM observations suggest an even distribution of small clusters or isolated atoms of these transition elements between or within the nanotubes.
