Abstract
We report the observation of mid-infrared multiphoton excitation, dissociation, and ionization of C60 by shaped CO2 laser pulses. The results are interpreted in the framework of the general statistical theory of infrared laser chemistry, adding some simple model assumptions. The observations on intensity- and fluence-dependent fragment ion distributions are consistent with a mechanism of vibrational preionization from energies exceeding the threshold for ionization by about a factor of 8.
