Abstract
The erosion characteristics of bare and nitrided Fe–30Mn–6Si–5Cr shape memory alloys have been systematically studied using slurry and cavitation erosion tests. The bare Fe–30Mn–6Si–5Cr specimen and SUS304 stainless steel exhibit similar slurry erosion resistance. The nitrided Fe–30Mn–6Si–5Cr specimen exhibits a lower weight loss than the bare specimen at impinged angle 30° due to the hardening effect of nitrided layer. Both bare and nitrided Fe–30Mn–6Si–5Cr alloys exhibit a better cavitation erosion resistance than SUS304 stainless steel due to the accommodation of stress-induced martensite. The nitrided layer can effectively improve the cavitation erosion resistance of Fe–30Mn–6Si–5Cr specimen.
