Abstract
To obtain lighter and more precise shooting gun barrel system, a proto-type muzzle brake was made using titanium alloy with NiCrAlY coating deposited on it by arc ion plating. After 400 rounds firing test, the ablation behavior of the NiCrAlY coated muzzle brake in gunpowder gas was investigated. The results show that NiCrAlY coating can obviously improve the ablation-resistance of the titanium alloy muzzle brake. Different from the electrodeposited chromium coating and tantalum coating (especially from the β-Ta coating), the main failure mechanism of NiCrAlY coating in gunpowder gas is the elements inter-diffusion of the coating and substrate for the thermal effect and the mechanical erosion of high temperature and pressure gunpowder gas. NiCrAlY coating is a potential anti-ablation coating for its good thermal-shock-resistance and ideal chemical corrosion resistance.
