Abstract
Recent studies have shown that a significant amount of phase separation occurs when two-phase mixtures flow through horizontal heat exchanger shells. Pressure drop is not the only factor affected by phase separation; heat transfer is also adversely affected.
e application of a homogeneous model to predict thermo-hydraulic behaviour in heat exchanger shells (which appears to be the practice with some commercial computer programs used for re-boiler design) is unacceptable. In this paper we present a simplified model for stratified flow in exchangers fitted with vertically cut baffles (which promote side-to-side flow). This has resulted in improvements in the prediction of heat transfer.
