Abstract
The minimum polarizability principle states that the polarizability is minimized as an electronic system evolves towards a stable state. This principle implies that the polarizability of a stable molecule at its equilibrium structure should be less than the sum of the polarizabilities of its constituent atoms. Careful scrutiny of 2386 experimental and theoretical polarizabilities reveals 86 violations and suggests that the minimum polarizability principle is violated approximately two to three per cent of the time.
