Flyovers in Mumbai: Design criteria and aspects of durability and serviceability

The government of Maharashtra decided to construct about 55 flyovers in the city of Mumbai. After the construction of a few flyovers was started, it was realised that the prevalent provisions of various codes for design of such structures were not strictly applicable. A review of the same would result in appreciable economy, lesser construction time and reduced on-site problems. Accordingly a study group was formed and its recommendations presented. Many of these recommendations were adopted for the subsequent flyovers. This paper discusses broadly the issues related to design criteria and aspects of durability and serviceability of the flyovers without: going into the details, as well as the reasons for the same.
