Design of silos for storing granular materials

Silos are containers for storing granular and powdery materials. Most have been designed on the basis of Janssenʹs formulae, though many silos have failed, in this paper the author presents a new approach which takes care of dynamic stresses while emptying, and impact stresses while filling. Janssenʹs method has been used in the static storage case. Though only one kind of granular material, wheat, has been considered, this method can be extended to other materials as well.
