Abstract
A new method is developed to model the response of materials subjected to external influences-the method of movable cellular automata (MCA). This method is based on the discrete description of the medium. This permits one to model directly the processes of damage generation and fracture. The MCA method has been successfully used to model the fracture of heterogeneous materials and structures subjected to a dynamic loading. The results of modeling are in good agreement with the experimental data. These results indicate that the MCA method can be useful for solving both scientific and engineering problems, from problems of materials science to expert evaluation of the durability of structures and their elements.
