Abstract
We solve for the exact eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian for spin I=1 including axially symmetric quadrupolar interactions and also calculate approximate eigenenergies and eigenstates up to second order in perturbation theory. The results are compared for a case where the quadrupolar splitting is a large fraction of the dipolar splitting. The relationship between polarization and the integral of an NMR signal under the influence of the quadrupolar interaction is discussed using nitrogen in solid ammonia as an example.
