Abstract
In order to increase the reliability of the polarized-ion source at COSY/Jülich the possibilities to develop a pulsing mechanism adapted to the COSY injection scheme have been investigated. As a result, an electrical pulsing scheme has been developed which is able to deliver a flat-top pulse of more than 3 mA for more than 10 ms. Existing model calculations based on differential rate equations have been extended, and in combination with new Monte Carlo simulations one is able to understand the physical process which allows the production of a pulsed Cs beam with the desired pulse properties. The new pulsing mechanism has been installed at the polarized-ion source at COSY which delivered a polarized H− output of more than 4.5 μA and with long-term stable operation.
