Abstract
A model for stress-induced martensitic transformation, which was successfully used in an Fe–Ni–C alloy in compression conditions, has been further studied and extended to investigate the stress-induced martensitic transformation in Fe–Ni–C alloy in tension and a white cast iron in compression. The predicted relationship between the bulk specimen volume change and the fraction of martensite formed has been experimentally proved. The model also predicts which orientation of grains should transform first and the predictions have also been experimentally confirmed using convergent beam Kikuchi line diffraction.
