Abstract
A quaternary Mg–5 wt.% Al–10.3 wt.% Ti–4.7 wt.% B alloy has been synthesized using mechanical milling, and its structure and properties have been studied. To understand the reaction mechanisms in this quaternary alloy, the individual binary and ternary alloys have been analysed. Extremely large elongation at room temperature of 43% in the binary Mg–10.3 wt.% Ti alloy has been obtained. The quarternary alloy gives the highest yield strength and ultimate tensile strength via the formation of titanium boride particulates. The present investigation demonstrates the potential of the Mg–Al–Ti–B alloy for light weight applications.
