  • Abstract
A simplified model for microsegregation in multicomponent systems has been developed for solidification, remelting, and dissolution of solid that may occur due to thermal and solutal changes. Compared to existing models, calculations are simplified by considering only the solid/liquid interface and the liquid portion of the domain at any given time, eliminating the solid composition integral from the mixture equation. Predictions may be made using a predefined cooling curve and composition history, or the model may be run in a fully coupled mode with a macro-scale model. Simulation results are presented for three Ni–Cr–Mo alloys under different solidification conditions, including open systems. The results demonstrate the multiple phase formation and tracking capabilities of the model in addition to highlighting the differences in the enthalpy- and temperature-controlled formulations.
