The field of metal phosphonate chemistry is expanding at a rapid rate. In the past two years many structure types have been prepared and characterized . These include layered and linear compounds, porous materials and new comp- lexants. The phosphonate group may be functionalized after reaction with the metal. This flexibility creates opportunities to design compounds with specific properties.
