Abstract
This paper describes the development of a novel thin film electrode system with agar gel electrolyte as a support for the construction of bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs). The BLMs are stable to mechanical and electrical shock for periods of time greater than 48 h. Physical characterization of BLMs was performed using capacitance measurements, and chemical characterization with gramicidin D provided evidence of the bilayer structure of the lipid films.
