  • Abstract
    The diffusion-induced stresses in a hollow cylinder were investigated. The solute diffusion follows the Fickian law, which was solved using the separation of variables. Both diffusion processes of constant surface concentration source and instantaneous surface concentration source were studied. The stress formulas in the hollow cylinder were derived. Two elastic cases of plane strain and zero axial force were treated. The largest absolute maximum shear stress is located at both the inner and outer surfaces at the initial time for constant surface concentration source. Based on the Tresca criterion, this place is most probable to produce the plastic deformation. For the instantaneous surface concentration source, the plastic deformation can not be prevented because the maximum shear stress is infinity at the outer surface at the initial time. Our results of hollow cylinder are compared with those of thin plate and solid cylinder in the literature, respectively.
