On the credibility of ultra rapid annealing

The greatly accelerated softening that may be induced by ultra-rapid annealing of some low-carbon steels has not been widely recognized. However, the phenomenon is consistent with established knowledge, and there is a rational explanation for the common difficulty of reproducing it. A recent proposition that ultra-rapid softening might be only an artefact of the experimental conditions is examined and shown to be mistaken.
